A microfiber cloth will do wonders for polishing a granite countertop. Before using the microfiber cloth, clean your countertop with hot water to remove stains and dust. Another natural mixture for cleaning granite is the one you will make with a little water and baking soda. You will thus obtain a paste that you can spread on the stains of your counter. You will let it act for a few moments before rubbing with a sponge. Then rinse with water and dry with a soft cloth.
Polish provides protection and a clean, shiny look to granite countertops, similar to the way waxing a car protects the paint. In addition to routine polishing, you should clean the counter with a mild cleanser regularly and apply a stone sealer as needed.
- Apply a thin layer of granite polish to the counter, spreading evenly over the entire surface with a dry cloth.
- Rub the varnish in small circular motions with a clean, dry cloth to buff the counter.
- Repeat circular motions in all areas of the counter until a high shine on the granite replaces the varnish.
When Polishing your countertops:
- Remove everything from your granite countertop, exposing the entire surface.
- Clean the entire surface of your granite countertop with a commercial granite cleaner, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Apply the cleaner with a soft, clean cloth. Rinse the granite thoroughly with a clean cloth, so no residue remains on the surface.
- Use a white paper towel or white cotton cloth and leave it on the counter for 5 minutes to determine if the countertop has been sealed. If the area under the towel is dark when you remove it, your granite should be sealed. Polishing without sealing first is a waste of effort. Your countertop may look shiny for a day or two, but the shine won’t last and the polish offers no everyday use protection.
- Apply a coat of professional granite sealer to your dry countertop. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, but generally, the filler can be applied with a brush or a soft cotton cloth. Cover the area completely and evenly with sealing tape.
- Apply granite polish to a 3-foot section of countertop with a soft cotton cloth. Let it soak for 3-4 minutes. Rub the polish into the granite in a circular motion, covering the entire area. Using a clean cloth, buff the granite to a shine, removing all traces of polish. If a few beads of water drip up onto the surface, you’ll know you’ve polished correctly. Finish the rest of the countertop in the same manner.
